About

ArtWorks is an outreach program housed in the Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities at the University of Arizona, Department of Family & Community Medicine. ArtWorks promotes community and mutual learning through creative and expressive arts interactions between adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and University of Arizona students. Together, they create a safe space for expression, connection, and growth for the artists, students, and community. Mutual respect and learning is the center of every activity at ArtWorks. All members are encouraged to practice their strengths and talents.

ArtWorks Recognized With The John A. Hartford Foundation 2024 Business Innovation Runner-Up Award

On July 10, 2024, the Aging and Disability Business Institute at USAging presented Artworks with The John A. Hartford Foundation 2024 Business Innovation Runner-Up Award for its unique suite of creative programming to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in southern Arizona.

My experience with ArtWorks was enriching, as I joined their scrapbooking project that aimed to help individuals with developmental disabilities create a person-centered book about themselves. I strongly believe that such projects are critical in emphasizing the importance of person-centered planning and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.

ArtWorks is an outreach program through the University of Arizona that functions as an art studio and day program where artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities between the age of 22 and 70 work together in a setting that respects diversity, advocates for new learning styles, and integrates life skills.
