Work-Based Learning Spotlight: Pima Air and Space Museum
By Drew Milne
As part of the Sonoran Center’s Pre-Employment Transition Services Project, the Sonoran Center partners with a variety of employers in the Work-Based Learning Program (WBLP). The WBLP offers teens and young adults the opportunity to get real work experience while developing self-advocacy skills, social skills, and independence throughout the school year. This is the first in a new series highlighting different WBLP employer partners.
The Pima Air and Space Museum
The Pima Air and Space Museum has worked with the Sonoran Center Pre-Employment Transition Services Project since 2024. Over the summer, they hosted participants in our Summer Work Program. Now that school has started, they are hosting students from the Work-Based Learning Program.
Students can rotate a variety of roles, including restaurant, gift shop, admissions, and exhibit maintenance. In these roles, students can accomplish a variety of tasks and hone different skills. They can practice using the register and interacting directly with customers. They can support the administrative team by preparing for special events, ranging from school field trips to holiday events. They can even ensure that the aircraft are well-maintained and ready for guests, learning about aerospace and military history in the process.
This partnership exemplifies the Pima Air and Space Museum’s commitment to being a pillar of the community, a mission they have undertaken for nearly 60 years.
