I am currently a second-year medical student at the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. I have a BS in Public Health and Physiology and a Spanish Minor from the University of Arizona. I currently volunteer with the MIND Mental Health Clinic, Make-A-Wish, and ArtWorks. My joint project with other medical students focuses on growing our exposure to working with people with various mental disabilities. As future physicians, we recognize that our patient population will be diverse. We want to support the inclusion and participation of people with disabilities into our education early and longitudinally. We accomplish this through working with ArtWorks, holding weekly sessions where medical students of all levels of training can interact with the artists in a fun and creative environment. As someone who has a family member with a mental disability, I know how difficult it can be to get proper healthcare and advocate for yourself. Through this training and partnership, I hope to be able to gain the skills necessary and discover the appropriate tools in which I can advocate for my future patients.
