Special Olympics: Indigenizing the Young Athletes Program

Special Olympics Young Athletes is an inclusive sport and play program for children with and without intellectual disabilities (ID), ages 2 to 7 years old. This presentation will provide an overview of Special Olympics, the Young Athletes program and how the program has been adapted for American Indian/Alaskan Native communities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the role Special Olympics on on children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
  2. Describe how the Young Athletes Program supports basic sports skills and team-building activities among children with and without intellectual disabilities, aged 2 to 7 years old
  3. Examine how the Young Athletes Program has been adopted for Native children in Head Start.
