The Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities has been invited to lead a team representing the state of Arizona in the SARTAC Technical Assistance Project, created by Self Advocates Becoming Empowered (SABE). The project brings together teams from multiple states to receive training in the use of accessible communication techniques such as plain language and easy read. The Sonoran Center — along with a key group of local partners — was selected for Arizona. After the initial training, the Center can then offer their own trainings to other organizations, providing the opportunity for the Center to take a leading role in expanding statewide capacity for the use of accessible communications. Drew Milne, Content Coordinator for the Sonoran Center, will be the Statewide Team Lead. Partner organizations contributing to the Arizona Statewide Team include the Arizona Department of Economic Security, the Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, and the Southwest Institute for Families and Children. The team participated in its first training session with SABE-SARTAC in early May, and trainings will continue until mid-July. The team will then begin focusing their efforts on creating accessible communications of their own and offering plain language/easy read trainings for outside organizations by the end of 2023.
