Meet Marcus- Supported Employment
Background
Marcus is a 43-year-old male who just completed his orientation to become a Job Coach. He has always enjoyed working in human services and education. He has worked with youth in his community with varying needs. He enjoyed his time being a teen mentor for youth with disabilities. Now on the job market, he finds a position as a Job Coach. He located a position working within the UCEDD in his city and is eager to get started. During his first orientation week, his supervisor, Adam, shared Supported Employment with him. Marcus believes that all persons who have a disability should have access to integrated work settings that meet their needs and will have the support to help them succeed in passions that match their interests and or passions.
However, Marcus has some concerns about his role. How can he foster the support individuals need in finding and securing competitive employment? How will Marcus learn to advocate, assess and develop jobs for his participants? Marcus understands the role of supported employment, yet he wants a better picture of his career path as a Job Coach.
