Welcome to the second edition of the Arizona Employment First newsletter!
Before we share the latest updates from Arizona, we want to pause and talk about our “why.” Why do we prioritize Employment First policies and strategies in disability employment services? Because Employment First benefits both job seekers with disabilities and our communities as a whole.

The benefits to job seekers are clear. Employment First means real jobs for fair pay and real inclusion in the community. Fair pay means minimum wage or more. It means work that brings value to both the employer and the employee. When people have meaningful jobs, they build social connections, gain independence, and find purpose. These outcomes are linked to better mental and physical health.
The benefits to our communities are just as powerful — even if they are not always as visible.

Communities grow stronger when their workforce reflects the full range of talent and ability. Employers gain reliable, skilled workers and often see improvements in workplace culture. Local economies benefit when more people are earning and spending wages in their communities.

Employment First also strengthens how public systems work together. In Arizona, this includes job seekers, families, schools, workforce systems, Vocational Rehabilitation, the Division of Developmental Disabilities, service providers, Medicaid, and community advocates. When these partners align around competitive integrated employment (CIE) as the expected outcome, services become more coordinated and public resources are used more effectively.

Ultimately, Employment First strengthens communities by advancing equity, promoting self-sufficiency, and ensuring that all people have the opportunity to contribute and succeed. When Employment First becomes a reality, our neighborhoods are more inclusive, our businesses are stronger, and our economy is healthier. Everybody wins with Employment First.
