On November 29, 2022, the journal Disability & Society published a research paper by the Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities’ Austin Duncan. The piece is titled “Living ‘with TBI’ as complex embodiment”. Duncan is a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, and is a member of the Sonoran Center’s Research & Policy Team. Disability & Society is a leading journal in the field of Disability studies.

The piece centers around Traumatic Brain Injury. Specifically, it makes the case for expanding the scope of TBI as we understand it. While TBI is often excluded from the most stringent definition of disability, it presents a broad range of sequelae that can necessitate accommodations in many different aspects of life. Austin’s article describes how understanding TBI as a unique and complex disability not only helps survivors access the resources and community they need, but also expands and enriches our understanding of disability itself.
