Understanding Sexual Violence and the Lived Experiences of People with I/DD
A self-paced Continuing Education course.
This training explores sexual violence in the context of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), a population that is disproportionately at risk for abuse and often faces significant barriers to being heard or believed. Participants will be able to define sexual violence, review high-profile cases involving vulnerable people, and build awareness of how these incidents have shaped risk-reduction efforts. The training also shares the impact of trauma on survivors and their families, highlighting lasting emotional and psychological effects. Attendees will learn to recognize risk factors and red flags and power dynamics that may increase vulnerability.

Who is this for?
Public Health Professionals including community health workers, physicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and others.
This training includes discussion of sexual violence and related topics that some participants may find distressing. Please engage at your own pace, take breaks as needed, and access support resources if needed.

About the Project
This continuing education course was developed in collaboration between the Sonoran Center and the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC). The goals of this collaboration are to:
- Summarize people's experiences with sexual violence from a recent research report.
- Define sexual violence.
- Build awareness for the impact of trauma on survivors and families.
The WRPHTC is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. The WRPHTC is a Designated Multiple Event Provider of Continuing Education Contact Hours (CECH) for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
